About NIH

Nehawu Investment Holdings (“NIH”) is an investment holding business that was established in 1997 on behalf of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU). The Union has about 250,000 members, the majority of which are employed in the civil service and comprise mostly officials and workers in the Education, Health and Public Works departments. At least 50% of the members are women.

In setting up NIH, a trust was established as a sole shareholder in the business. This trust is a union controlled trust, with the trustees being the National Officer Bearers of the Union and the Chairperson of NIH.

In terms of the trust deed, the investment company's over-riding mission is to maximise the benefits to its ultimate beneficiary i.e. the union membership. Over the years this has trickled down through bursaries.

The vision is to achieve economic empowerment of NEHAWU and its members by strategically investing in enterprises which contribute towards the deepening of South Africa's socio-economic transformation and realising the union's vision of economic emancipation and equality.
